But out of all the slips in the world (and there are many, trust), there is one particular style from one particular brand that celebrities keep going back to, so much so that we can’t help but take notice.
By designer Nili Lotan, the slip dress in question is crafted from fine silk charmeuse with a raw-edge hemline, and it comes in literally every colour imaginable. And given its recent meteoric rise in fame—exposure from Gigi Hadid, Kim Kardashian, Selena Gomez, and Kylie Jenner, to name a few—it’s hard to believe that this slip was first conceived nearly a decade ago.
“Did I know it was going to be a success? No! I designed it the same way I designed any other dress,” Lotan told us. “But I knew it was something when I first opened my East Hamptons store six years ago and in the first week, a woman came in and ordered that dress in 10 colours—that’s when I realised, How often do you design an item that people want multiples of? It’s not candy, these are expensive dresses.”
Since its inception, she’s reimagined her classic cami-style design in every shade, in varying lengths, and in different fabrications, but she maintains that the knee- and floor-length styles in navy and black charmeuse are best-sellers. And once this recent wave of It girls discovered the dress, Lotan remarked she could hardly keep it in stock (“It was completely unexpected,” she said).
As for an explanation of why this slip dress is so in-demand, Lotan can only guess. “The details—there’s something about the contrast between the elegant dress and the raw finish that makes it so cool,” she says. “It’s sexy, it’s minimal, it’s sophisticated, it’s timeless, and it’s season-less, which embodies everything my brand stands for. You put it on and you are in a million dollar dress.”
